SWEET LOVE (licking chocolate) Esther Derkx 2009

The plates SWEET LOVE (licking chocolate) were inspired by the pictures of the loving couples who, gazing into one anothers eyes, often adorn Dutch porcelain. At first sight, these seem to be chaste, romantic scenes, but with a sensual ondertone. I wished to transport this sensuality into our day and age. With this in mind, designs of modern couples have been abstracted, reflected, and subsequently surrounded by romantic floral patterns. A second layer of decoration has been superimposed on this. This second design however, covering the first, is of a completely different nature. It is screenprinted chocolate that can be licked off. This action, sensuous in itself, is further reinforced by the figures that then appear. This situation recalls the plates with erotic pictures from Antiquity, which encouraged the consumer to eat up all his food in order to be able to enjoy the underlying presentation. Once they have been licked clean, the choc-o-plates can be displayed as showpieces, just like traditional Dutch porcelain.
